As everyone scrambles to copy the low performance model of green roof most commonly prescribed in Europe, Bioroof has forged a better path. Instead of following the other system manufacturers, Bioroof has listened to the needs of the North American client. With the top reasons cited for purchasing a green roof being storm water retention, cooling and sustainability, we set to work creating a system that would achieve a very high standard of performance.

We paid attention to the brown of a green roof as well, designing a growing medium that is unrivalled in its ability to retain moisture while maintaining porosity, a growing medium which in comparison is lighter by half than the aggregate based growing mediums otherwise prescribed, a growing medium which therefore can be installed at greater depth to accommodate a more diverse planting palette, a growing medium which makes use of natural biological function to sustain plants and degrade water born urban pollutants and finally a growing medium which can be locally sourced from renewable and recycled materials throughout the continent.

We also paid attention to the black of a green roof. The waterproofing of a roof top is vital to the overall success of the green roof; therefore any system installed above it must not affect its ability to keep water out of the building. We’ve employed the advice of some of North America’s top building scientists to ensure our system is compatible with the requirements of sound roofing practices. We have also designed our system with enough flexibility that it is able to go over a wide variety of roof types. And by paying attention to these details we are able to improve the longevity of most roofing systems well beyond what is normally expected.

Bioroof System components are truly sustainable, able to last indefinitely and be re-used (with the exception of the growing medium and plants). If the waterproofing needs to be replaced, the green roof can be disassembled and re-installed for many more decades of use.

Finally, the real test of a company is in the warranty it offers.  Most green roof system manufacturers will warranty the components and vegetation for one year. Some will not even cover the vegetation. 

Once again Bioroof is different, offering full warranty coverage, including labor and materials (including vegetation) for the life of the roofing membrane. The only condition is the green roof must be maintained by a Bioroof Certified Installer. As long as it is, we will warranty the Bioroof System in its entirety. Yes, it’s that simple.
